ABSTRACT
Introduction: rivers, settlements, lakes, various forms of relief have their own names – toponyms, which are quite stable historical and cultural names of geographical objects characteristic of this or that area, but they are also subject to changes in time. Among them are
hydronyms – proper names of water objects. There is no doubt that in order to study the modern names of geographical objects it becomes necessary to use the historical-toponymic approach. Identification and analysis of changes in the names of geographical objects allows us to better understand the history of settlement and development of the territory in the historical and ethnographic aspect.
Objective: identification of changes in the names of hydronyms in the Konda River basin over historical time (the period of written history fixation) based on a comprehensive historical, toponomic, and cartographic analysis of written and cartographic sources.
Research materials: travel descriptions of the Konda River by G. F. Miller, drawing maps by S. U. Remezov, maps of Western Siberia and topographic maps.
Results and novelty of the research: the article systematizes historical information about the rivers of the Konda basin on the basis of various cartographic materials. In the process of analyzing written and cartographic sources (S. U. Remezov, G. F. Miller, A. A. Dunin-
Gorkavich, etc.) on the location and names of geographical objects in the Konda basin and comparing them with modern topographic and pilotage maps, 55 of the 66 hydronyms were identified, along with their chronological and spatial variability. The novelty of the study lies
in the author’s confirmation of the locations of hydronyms identified in G. F. Miller’s travel notes with names from modern cartographic sources, and also established hydronyms that have been preserved/not preserved to date.
