Orthodox religiosity of Mansi living in the Northern Urals in the ethnographic and missionary sources of the second half of the XIX – beginning of the XX centuries

Abstract. The article considers the pre-revolutionary ethnographic descriptions of Mansi living in the Northern Urals and publications concerning missionary activity of the Russian Orthodox Church in Verhoturye district of the Perm province. A review of the most famous and interesting ethnographic sources from the author’s point of view contains a brief analysis of the religious traditions of Northern Urals Mansi formed under the influence of Christianity. Missionaries’ publications expand understanding of the mentioned religious traditions and disclose its content in a particular historical context. The overall goal of analysis of the sources is to determine the condition of the Orthodox religiosity of Mansi in the second half of the XIX – beginning of the XX centuries.
