Abstract. The article is about the development of the “Northern style in Arts” and focuses also on the role of non-traditional art of the Khanty within contemporary art. The article deals with some observations regarding the evolution of the “Northern style in Arts” which connects its development to an earlier period which was not recognized by other scientists so far. The work of contemporary national artists of the Khanty is described by different trends of the “Northern style in Arts”. They demonstrate progress and also problems within the academic education for the Khanty and Mansi people of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug- Ugra.
