Abstract. Introduction: the phonetic system of the Surgut dialect of the Khanty language is formed by a complex of differential signs and has not yet been studied enough. Objective: to classify short vowels of the first syllable of the Surgut dialect of the Khanty language. Research materials: records of oral speech of three speakers of the Surgut dialect of the Khanty language. Results and novelty of the research: the phonetic subsystem of vowels of the first syllable in the Surgut dialect of the Khanty language includes 57 units without additional articulation. The vowels are distributed over four articulation rows: anterior, central, central-posterior, posterior. Most of the vowels are of anterior and central-posterior rows. The most active parts of the tongue, when articulating vowels, are the middle part of the back of the tongue, which is directed towards the middle of the front of the hard palate, and the dorsal part of the tongue, which is directed towards the middle of the anterior part of the soft palate. In the first syllable, the vocalism of the Surgut dialect of the Khanty language has an expanded system, which includes both “pure” long and short vowels, as well as long intermittent vowels of full and incomplete formation. They can have additional articulation – labialization, nasalization, pharingalization. A specific laryngeal-rounded vowel (rare) is fixed, both “pure” and with additional articulation. Specific feature of the Surgut dialect is pharingalization. A wide variation in the pronunciation of sounds indicates a strong variation in the vocalism of the Surgut dialect. The work carried out made it possible to identify the controversial places in the spelling currently adopted for the Surgut dialect. Special attention should be paid to the use of the letter ə in the first syllable, which in this position denotes not a reduced sound, but a closed sound of the front row, which should be indicated by the corresponding letter.
Key words: phonetics, Khanty language, Surgut dialect, vocalism, the first syllable.
