ABSTRACT
Introduction: the article, from the point of view of structural linguistics and etymology, considers the characteristic features of the surnames of the Khanty living in the Kazym River basin.
Objective: to analyze the ways in which surnames are formed and to establish among them the main way.
Research materials: surnames of the Kazym Khanty, identified by historians and ethnographers (known since the beginning of the XVII century); surnames recorded in dictionaries and works of linguists.
Results and novelty of the research: the main conclusion is that the adoption of an authentic name (appelative) was the main method of formation of the names of the Khanty of Kazym. At the same time, it was not always on behalf of a particular person. Quite often a surname was assigned, the basis of which was the naming of this genus, which in turn goes back to any certain characteristic (objective: by place of residence, type of occupation, the predominant feature of the character of the founder of the genus, another of any constant). With regard to the identified list, a general linguistic taxonomy has been carried out: surnames are divided into different groups – taking into account the semantics and etymology of the roots from which they are formed. Minus the Russian names of their own, which were the basis of a separate series of surnames, the appelative words that are motivating for the rest of the surnames are divided into two groups: native (from the ancestor language and Khanty) and borrowed (from related and non-related languages). The scientific novelty of the study is to attract data from cognitive science and lexical typology to establish the original semantics of the words that served as the basis of the surnames of the Khanty.
Key words: personal name, word formation, human characteristic, etymology, language contacts, Khanty language.
Acknowledgements: the authors express gratitude to the reviewer of this article.
