Abstract
Introduction: diachronic research gives maximum information about a toponym as a lexical unit, which is contained in the language data. Only in the result of linguistic analysis we can reveal language affiliation of a word from which a toponym is formed. It is the relevance of the chosen theme. The object of the study was the toponymic vocabulary given in the «Historical dictionary of toponyms of Simbirsk province»; the subject of the study are the toponyms of Mordovian origin.
Objective: to identify and etymologize the toponyms of Mordovian origin.
Research materials: the «Historical Dictionary of toponyms of the Simbirsk Province» (1859–1913).
Results and novelty of the research: in the «Historical Dictionary of Toponyms of the Simbirsk Province» (1859–1913), the authors identified 101 toponyms of Mordovian (Moksha and Erzya) origin; among them 51 placenames and 50 hydronyms. Most placenames are originally Mordovian words, a small part are mixed names. In their structure, most of the toponyms are complex names, in most cases the main component of placenames is the Mordovian pre-Christian name; the second component of hydronyms is often the topoformant (the repeating part of toponym) lei ‘river’, which can be complicated by the diminutive suffix –ka. The scientific novelty of the study is that etimologization of toponyms of Mordovian origin in the territory of the Simbirsk province has been carried out for the first time. The results of the study contribute to further studies of toponyms of Mordovian origin in neighboring regions;
it can be of interest to Finno-Ugric scientists, and it can be used to determine the boundaries of ethnic Mordovian settlements.
Key words: Mordovian language, Moksha language, Erzya language, etymology, toponym, hydronym, placename.
