.ABSTRACT
Introduction: to the beginning of the XX century, the oikonym of the Lower Konda had passed a long way of development, having absorbed the features of the culture of the peoples who created it. The semantics and
etymology of settlement names reflect information of high significance for the interpretation of cultural and historical facts of the past and the present.
Objective: semantic and etymological characteristics of the names of settlements of the Lower Konda of the beginning of the XX century in the context of historical development.
Research materials: names of settlements of the Lower Konda territory of the beginning of the XX century, extracted from geographical maps, written sources, and data obtained in the field.
Results and novelty of the research: it was found that the territory of the Lower Konda at the turn of the XX century had parallel Khanty and Russian oikonymic systems. In the autochthonous and in the Russian oikonomia
features of the socio-political organization of ethnic groups in contact are reflected. The universal principles of nomination are embodied in multilingual oikonyms: by the properties of the named object, by the connection with
another object, by the connection with a person. If there are similarities, onyms are nationally specific. Names of Khanty origin mainly contain information about the geographical location of the object, about the features of the natural environment. The motivating bases of the most Russian oikonyms are the names of settlers. The scientific novelty consists in the fact that for the first time the oikonyms of the Lower Konda are systematized; their meaning and origin are described; the fragment of the oikonymic system of the beginning of the XX century is recreated.
Key words: Lower Konda, oikonym, oikonymy, toponymy, settlement, the Khanty, motivating basis, semantics, etymology.
