ABSTRACT
Introduction: the proposed article presents an analysis of the state of the phonetic structure of the word stem in the Mordovian languages in comparison with the Baltic-Finnish (Finnish and Estonian) one. The study reveals
the degree of identity of the ancient word stem, as well as the presence and nature of the changes that occurred in it in the languages under consideration.
Objective: to study, on the basis of a comparative method, the phonetic changes that have occurred in the field of consonantism in the nominal and verbal foundations of Finno-Ugric origin in the middle of the word and to
determine the preserved degrees of identity of the ancient Finno-Ugric word stem.
Research materials: the nominal and verbal foundations of Finno-Ugric origin in the modern Mordovian languages, considered from the point of view of the comparative historical method, as well as their etymological
correspondence in the Baltic-Finnish (Finnish and Estonian) languages.
Results and novelty of the research: the article provides a detailed description of the development of the consonant system in the middle of the Finno-Ugric word stem; reveals the differences that arose in the compared
languages as a result of separate development; identifies the reasons that transformed the structure of the protoFinno-Ugric stem in the Mordovian languages. The problem associated with the study of the structure of the
Finno-Ugric word stem on the material of the Mordovian languages is very relevant. Insufficient knowledge of it affects the development of problems of word formation, historical lexicology and etymology. The novelty of the
study is to identify additional data necessary for further in-depth study of the phonemic and morphemic levels of the Mordovian, Moksha and Erzya languages, which can provide the latest information to address certain aspects of both Finno-Ugric and Mordovian linguistics.
Key words: consonantism, word stem, Mordovian languages, palatalization, affricate, fricative, sonorous.
