Key words: Lower Irtysh region, medieval archaeology, Ugric towns, Konda Khanty, heroic epos.
Acknowledgements: field studies were carried out with the financial support of the RFFR and the Government of KhMAO – Yugra within the framework of scientific project No. 18-49-860008. The authors thank Ilya Viktrovich Abramov, ethnographer (Institute of History and Archaeology of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Yekaterinburg), who directly participated in field research; Yulia Valeryevna Islamova, Candidate of Philological Sciences (Yugra State University, Khanty-Mansiysk) for consultations on toponymy.
