ABSTRACT
Introduction: the article updates the problem of preserving and developing the Karelian language, listed by UNESCO in 2010 in the so-called “Red Book” of the languages of the peoples of the world, and also analyzes possible ways to solve the problem in the modern socio-cultural situation in the Kalevala National
Objective: to identify sociocultural aspects that motivate residents of the Kalevala District to study and preserve the Karelian language, as well as to detect sociocultural factors that positively and negatively affect the demand for the Karelian language in the National District.
Research materials: the results of a comprehensive scientific expedition of the Humanitarian Innovation Park of Petrozavodsk State University to the territory of the Kalevala National District of the Republic of Karelia in 2021.
Results and novelty of the research: scientific novelty consists in a comprehensive approach to the problem studied using the tools of sociology, linguistics, cultural studies and axiology. The results of the study are the identified sociocultural aspects of the motivational attitudes of respondents to the use of the language, as well as the definition of positive and negative sociocultural factors that affect the demand for the Karelian language in its homeland.
