ABSTRACT
Introduction: the article presents a lexical and semantic analysis of the toponymic nomenclature of the Erzya-Mordovian village of Maly Tolkay of the Pokhvistnevo District of Samara Oblast and its environs. The relevance of the study is due to the lack of special scientific papers on the toponymy of this settlement.
Objective: to carry out the lexical-semantic and component-contextual analysis of the toponymic nomenclature of the Erzya-Mordovian village of Maly Tolkay of Samara Oblast and to identify the principles of nomination of geographical objects with the allocation of toponymic strata of the toponymic space under study.
Research materials: the data collected and processed by the author during the 2019 field season in the village Maly Tolkay; the relevant data on the Erzya toponymy of other Districts of Samara Oblast and adjacent regions from the territory of the Republic of Mordovia are involved for comparative analysis.
Results and novelty of the research: as a result of the conducted research, it was found that the basis of the Maly Tolkay toponymic space is made up of Erzya and Russian names, many of which have lexical and semantic parallels in other toponymic spaces of the Pokhvistnevo Mordovian people. The substrate layer, which is generally insignificant, is represented by toponyms related to large geographical objects. These are the potamonym Tolkay and the oronym Shikhan on the territory of this toponymic space. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that 13 toponymic units of the studied toponymic space are introduced into scientific circulation for the first time; original etymological solutions are proposed for two previously known toponymic units.
Key words: toponymy, toponymic vocabulary, Erzya-Mordovian language, Mordovian people, Shoksha-Mordovian people, Samara Oblast, Maly Tolkay
Acknowledgments: the author expresses gratitude to the informants and reviewers and special gratitude to the Head of the rural settlement of Maly Tolkay Deryuzhova Irina Takhirovna.
