ABSTRACT
Introduction: the Finno-Ugric phytonymy (plants names), stands out for its scope and variety, as well as for its connection with other scientific disciplines, such as history, ethnography and agricultural engineering. In the present paper, the author has made an attempt to study folk names of plants belonging to the genus Matricaria in the Finno-Permic languages, one of the two basic branches of Finno-Ugric languages, excluding Ugric languages (Ob-Ugric and Hungarian).
Objective: to determine the etymology of the folk names of chamomile in the Finno-Permian languages, their morphological structure, as well as the features of the nomination.
Research materials: we have examined approximately 200 names of camomile taken from a number of lexicographical works, monographs and scientific articles. All the phytonyms were sorted into lexical-semantic clasters, for ease of navigation and systematization.
Results and novelty of the research: the names of chamomile in the languages under consideration are exceptionally diverse. Regarding the morphological structure, the names of chamomile fall into three groups: 1) ancient words and loanwords in which no suffix can be found, 2) suffixal derivatives, and 3) composite (compound) words. The composite names of chamomile usually consist of two or three components. Most Finnic-Permian names for chamomile are products of the plant’s nomination by some distinct feature; the main features of the nomination are: flower coloring, place of growth, smell, food use, household use, medicinal properties, relation to some folk belief. A comparative study of the chamomile names in the Finno-Permian languages is carried out for the first time.
Key words: Finno-Ugric languages, Finno-Permian languages, lexicon, phytonyms, plant names, chamomile
