ABSTRACT
Introduction: the article is devoted to the description of the temporal semantics of the grammatical forms of a present tense verb in the Udmurt language in the synchronic aspect. Within the two main groups (the present relevant and the present irrelevant), specific types and subtypes of temporal meanings are identified.
Objective: to identify the types of temporal and semantic meanings of the present tense verbs in the Udmurt language.
Research materials: the empirical base of the study is made up of sentences from literary texts in the Udmurt language, extracted from the National Corpus of the Udmurt Language (more than 2,500 uses of the verbs in the present tense).
Results and novelty of the research: the article presents for the first time the analysis of the temporal semantics of an Udmurt verb on the example of the present forms. Two main groups of semantic meanings that are presented by the formsof the present tense of a verb in the Udmurt language are considered: the present relevant and the present irrelevant. It has been established that the first group includes the following types of meanings: a) the present time of the moment of speech; b) present extended; c) present performative. The second group is subdivided into a) the irrelevant present with expression of usuality; b) the present qualitative; c) the present gnomic. The data obtained allow us to speak about a new typological classification of the temporal and semantic meanings of an Udmurt verb in the present tense, since linguistic time is always closely related to temporality.
Key words: Finno-Ugric languages, semantics, temporality, Udmurt language, grammar of the Udmurt language, verb, present tense
