Interchange in the semantic zone of the instrumentalis in the Komi language

ABSTRACT
Introduction: the modern period in the development of Finno-Ugric linguistics is characterized by an increased interest in the problems of the variable use of linguistic units. The study of grammatical variants, determination of their quantitative ratio is of particular relevance for determination of the trend of language development.
Objective: to identify cases and postpositions interchanging with the instrumentalis; to determine trends of change in the sphere of their functioning.
Research materials: the material for the study is extracted from the Komi Language Corpus.
Results and novelty of the research: it is established that in the modern Komi language for expression of a number of meanings, in parallel with the instrumentalis, comitative, elative, inessive, prolative, nominative and postposition vylyn ‘on’ can be used. Based on the quantitative analysis of empirical data, the trends in the development of the functional and semantic sphere of the instrumentalis are determined: the changes relate to the expansion or, on the contrary, some narrowing of the field of its use. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that for the first time on the example of a separate
case, the possibility of parallel use in a number of contexts of direct and indirect cases, object and spatial cases is shown. The results obtained can be used in the typological study of cases.
