ABSTRACT
Introduction: for the first time, the semantics and syntactic compatibility of Khanty verbs of different lexico-semantic groups with the preverb śiw ‘there’ are considered (verbs of action, state, movement, displacement). The most complete list of verbs combined with this preverb in the Kazym dialect of the Khanty language has been revealed. The change of the verb valence system when combined with this preverb is characterized, as well as the modification of the verb semantics while maintaining the valence system. Similarities in the semantics of the synonymous preverbs siw, jӑχa, vөtśa in the expression
of spatial values have been established.
Objective: to identify the circle of verbs combined with the preverb śiw; to describe the transition of verbs from one lexico-semantic group to another when combined with this preverb; to identify the syntactic compatibility of verbs with this preverb in the Khanty language.
Research materials: verbs with the preverbal unit śiw of the Kazym dialect of the Khanty language collected by the author from informants and extracted from the dictionary of the Khanty language.
Results and novelty of the research: for the first time, the most complete list of verbs of different lexico-semantic groups combined with the preverb śiw is revealed. As a result of the addition of the preverb, the number of valences of derived verbs can either be preserved or reduced. The valence of the verbs of state is preserved, the valence of the verbs of action can be preserved or decreased, and the verbs of movement and displacement lose their locative valence. The composition of the semantic group of verbs changes due to the syntactic compatibility of a verb with different types of
subjects and objects (animate, inanimate). The results of the reserach can be used to compile dictionaries, to compare related and different-structured languages, as well as to write a scientific grammar of the Khanty language.
Key words: preverb, Khanty language, valence, lexico-semantic group, verbs of action, verbs of state
Acknowledgments: the author expresses the gratitude to anonymous reviewers, as well as to all informants who speak the Khanty and Mansi languages.
