ABSTRACT
Introduction: among the Ob-Ugric and North American traditional types of beliefs, the belief in reincarnation is distinguished. Studies in this area on the material of the Indians and Inuits have been conducted since the 1990s, among the Khanty and Mansi peoples since the 2000s, which allows for a comparative analysis of the available data.
Objective: to determine the common and special in the ideas of the reincarnation of the Khanty and Mansi peoples, for one thing, and the indigenous peoples of North America, for the other.
Research materials: published information on the traditions of reincarnation among the Ob Ugrians and North American Indians and Inuits, including classifications signs of this phenomenon.
Results and novelty of the research: ideas about reincarnation in the traditional cultures of North America and the indigenous peoples of Yugra are identical in nature. They are based on the views about two types of human soul, about the reincarnation of ancestors in their family (clan), the possibility of a reincarnating soul to incarnate in several infants with similar characteristics to a deceased relative from whom their soul was inherited. This is the first comparative work on the traditions of the reincarnation of the Ob Ugrians and the indigenous peoples of North America, which opens up prospects for
further comparative study of these traditional cultures.
Key words: belief in reincarnation, traditional cultures, Ob Ugrians, North American Indians, Inuits, mytho-ritual traditions
