ABSTRACT
Introduction: this work examines the reflection of the linguistic picture of the world of the Mordovian people through the prism of national riddles. Based on the material of the Moksha and Erzya riddles about nature, man, and time, the methods of artistic nomination of objects and phenomena reflecting the peculiarities of national thinking and perception of the surrounding world are studied.
Objective: to identify the forms of linguistic reflection of the national picture of the world in Mordovian riddles by analyzing the features of the structure of their imagery, the frequency of methods of artistic nomination of the object (phenomenon) being guessed, indicating the specifics of the people’s thinking.
Research materials: Moksha and Erzya riddles about nature, man, and time, published in the “Systematic Collection of Mordovian Riddles”.
Results and novelty of the research: the novelty of the work is justified by the fact that for the first time in the framework of linguistic and cultural research, a Mordovian riddle becomes a material for reconstruction and analysis of the national linguistic picture of the world. As a result of the study, it was found that the most frequent form of imagery in Mordovian riddles is substitution (metaphorization), and objects from everyday human life, as a rule, become objects of substitution. A little less common are riddles that give indications of the qualities and properties of an object, its appearance,
and actions. This indicates the tendency of the people to poetize everyday life, as well as the imagery of the Mordovian people’s thinking; about the desire to present a thought as expressively and emotionally as possible; about the equivalence of the action and quality of the object for a representative of the national community in its identification; about the preference for visual perception over auditory. The ethno-cultural component is especially vividly present in Mordovian riddles with an unclear metaphor, unexpected associativity, with insufficient signs of an object of a riddle, with the presence of an onym, with a double solving the riddle or, conversely, with a single solving in a double nomination.
