Objective: to reveal the specifics of the representation of family and marriage relations in K. Abramov’s novel “Purgaz”.
Research materials: K. Abramov’s novel-legend “Purgaz”.
Results and novelty of the research: the theme of family in K. Abramov’s novel “Purgaz” is influenced by the author’s worldview and his perception of family as a value. In this work, the writer depicts the ancient Mordovian society of the late XII and early XIII centuries.
During this period, paganism, polygamy (polygyne), early marriage or marriage by parental decision, bride kidnapping, and levirate were common. The author depicts various models of mixed (interethnic, interfaith) marriages. The role of the family is important in the process of character formation, as well as in strengthening the foundations of the state, the political stability of society, and the cultural development of an ethnic group. Using the example of the Purgaz and Rusha family, the author depicts the transformation of the ethnic tradition of polygamy and the establishment of monogamous relationships among the Mordovian people. Women characters play a significant role in the novel’s exploration of the theme of family. The scientific novelty of the article is determined by the fact that the theme of family and marital relations in K. Abramov’s novel “Purgaz” becomes the object of a special study for the first time.
