About the reasons of the West Siberian Peasant Rebellion in 1921

Abstract.The article considers the reasons of the West Siberian Peasant Rebellion in 1921 – the largest armed anti-Bolshevik action in the history of existence of the Soviet Union. Special attention is drawn to the factors that led to the growing discontent of the population in the North of Western Siberia. The following factors have been defined: abuses during the prodrazvyorstka and involvement of local citizens to labor duty; the unsystematic nature of the prodrazvyorstka and duties; incompetence of local governments at all levels was the cause of inconsistency of actions of different government structures which were engaged in the implementation of the policy of War communism; the conflict of public moods, expectations, views on the prospects of development of the state which determined the actions of the concrete persons in certain situations; inflated expectations of the authorities and the most active part of the Communists of the possibilities and prospects for a speedy transition to the non-market society which gave rise to violence against the class and ideologically alien to sectors of society; generating violence against the class and ideological alien segments of society; misunderstanding by managers of different levels of local specificity; arrogant and disdainful attitude to the «ignorant» northerners; «frontier» location of Tyumen Province between the Urals and Siberia, caused, in particular, by the weakness of the local military forces which were not able to rapidly crush popular resentment.
