ABSTRACT
Introduction: the article considers the causative markers in the Upper Lozva dialect of the modern Mansi language. These markers are assumed to be allomorphs of one affix, so the article aimes to construct a hypothesis about their distribution. Also we briefly analyse the modern Mansi tendency to change the old synthetic causative with new analytic one.
Objective: to identify the distributional patterns, in which causative allomorphs can be combined with different types of roots.
Research materials: questionnaire survey, made with Upper Lozva dialect speakers; the parallel Mansi-Russian text corpus, collected by S. V. Pokrovskaya, V. S. Kharitonov and D. O. Zhornik during the 2017–2019 expeditions.
Results and novelty of the research: the scientific novelty of the research is a new way to approach the Mansi causative markers: traditionally they were regarded as a set of different suffixes, now we suppose that it appropriate to see them as allomorphs of one suffix. Another new point is to apply the morphonological method to the Mansi material, which have never been done before. There are four causative markers in Mansi: -Vlt-, -Vpt-, -tt-, -t-. -Vlt- is the basic one, while the others appear in certain phonological conditions: -Vpt- is for stems with a liquid in it; in -tt- and -t- results a simplified cluster. We suppose that there exists two homonymous suffixes -t-, one of them is a causative allomorph and the other derives transitive verbs from nouns. Also the research reveals that suffixal causative tends to die out in modern Mansi, being replaced by analytic one.
Key words: Mansi language, Northern dialects of the Mansi language, Upper Lozva dialect, causative, morphological causative, allomorphy.
