ABSTRACT
Introduction: the subject of the research is the semantics and functions of anthroponyms in a modern Mordovian novel, as well as the process of augmentation of the meaning and variations of literary names.
Objective: to reveal the functional and semantic features of anthroponyms in a Mordovian novel of the turn of the XX–XXI centuries, their role in the expression of the author’s concept and national consciousness; to determine the ways of naming characters in individual texts.
Research materials: novels by A. Doronin, A. Bryzhinsky, E. Chetvergov.
Results and novelty of the research: anthroponymic space of a Mordovian modern novel is analyzed; the meaning and functions of anthroponyms in the content and semantic structure of a novel are considered. As a result of the semantic, functional and etymological analysis of anthroponyms we come to the conclusion that a name of a character in a Mordovian novel of the turn of the XX–XXI centuries has semantic versatility. It acts as a polyfunctional sign; through it the author’s worldview and intentions are reflected, the content structure of a work, the ideological and symbolic code, and the spatial and temporal chronotope are formed. In addition to the identifying, characterizing role, a literary anthroponym provides information about the nationality of a character; it becomes a part of the national picture of the world; it reveals social, spiritual and moral problems and conveys subtext information. The scientific novelty of the article consists in concretizing and supplementing the functional, semantic features of anthroponyms, clarifying the naming structures in a Mordovian novel of recent decades.
Key words: modern Mordovian novel, proper name, anthroponym, semantics of a name, artistic function, concept, character
