Abstract. Introduction: in the result of archaeological excavations of the ancient settlement Krasny Yar we have received a collection in 53 items which characterize the material culture of the medieval population of the Urals. Objective: to consider the items made of iron, clay, bone, stone, and bronze from the materials of excavations
of the site. Research materials: items made of iron (arrowheads, a sword’s guard, a square plate of undefined functional purpose), items made of clay (a crucible, a scraper, molded ceramics of a vessel, items made of backed clay of undefined functional purpose), items made of bone (arrowheads, little-enders, a piercer, an anthropomorphic chip,
a knife, wedges, items of undefined functional purpose), items made of stone (sharpening stones (whetstones), stones without traces of processing), items made of bronze (flat semicircular defective casting). Results and novelty of the research: the content of the finds confirms the presence of iron metallurgy, bronze casting, treatment of bone and stone, processing of hides and skins, and ceramic production. Inhabitation in the strong fortified site of ancient settlement on the “South” route through the Urals, as well as the presence of military items in the finds indicate a high degree of military tension in that time. It was determined, in particular, by the trade–intermediary activity, which involved the population of the ancient settlement. Novelty of the article consists in the fact that for the first time introduced into scientific circulation the materials of the excavations of the ancient settlement of Krasny Yar.
Key words: artifact, middle ages, settlement, excavations, Batyr culture.
