Abstract. The character of Righteous is one of those characters, which is the part of Khanty literature together with the artistic method of the village prose. The heroes of R.P. Rugin’s stories and novels realize the conception of righteousness in Khanty literature due to the moral intuition, sacrifi ce, ethical standards, defi ning their views and actions, in conjunction with the ethnic system of moral and religious values and prohibitions. The hero-righteous is distinguished in the system of characters by its civil position and moral qualities, aimed at the service for the benefi t of people and the prosperity of the native land. The referring to the study of the people’s life values occurs in the prose of Rugin through the character of the Righteous, refl ects the process of spiritual and moral searches, revealing the specifi cs of the national character.
