ABSTRACT
Introduction: the topicality of the paper is due to the ever increasing interest in specific national designations of color in the Khanty language on the one hand, and by insufficient exploration of the category in the Khanty
folklore, on the other hand. Nowadays the language is on the brink of extinction; studying the specificity of color naming in poetic formula of Khanty can open up new opportunities for development and preservation of the
language.
Objective: to identify the frequency of use of color markers in the designation of properties of objects of inanimate nature in stable poetic formulas found in songs performed during the Khanty ritual holiday «The Bear
Games».
Research materials: ceremonial songs performed during the Bear Holidays, characterized by persistent repetitive elements called poetic formulas, as well as field materials and personal archives of T. A. Moldanova.
Results and novelty of the research: stable folklore phrases of Khanty texts are used for the first time in the study of color characteristics of objects of inanimate nature. The analysis of the material revealed that, in relation to other characteristics, the color marking of objects of nature is not dominant. It is about 15%. If we take into account only those epithets that clearly mark the color, this is 7.5%. Therefore, in Khanty culture, color information did not play a significant role. As a result of the analysis, it was found that in the direct meaning, such colors as green, white, red and yellow are used as color values. Green and white mark summer and winter respectively, while red and yellow mark autumn. The green color is also applied in other cases. The color characteristic of autumn nature is probably quite late, and has more aesthetic significance than cognitive and practical. The paper raises the question of including the green color in the main ones.
Key words: color, color designation, poetic formula, chants, bear games.
Acknowledgments: the authors are grateful to T. A. Moldanov for the help in interpretation of field materials and translation of folk poetic collocations from the Khanty language into the Russian.
