ABSTRACT
Introduction: the article analyzes the commercial name of the residential complex “Talojärvi – City by the Water” by means of onomastic and sociolinguistic research methods.
Objective: definition of the image semantics of the commercial name and its relation to historical and modern urban place names of Petrozavodsk.
Research materials: archival materials and periodicals; data of the sociological study on naming in the Karelian language in the Republic of Karelia.
Results and novelty of the research: the work is the first study of urban commercial naming based on Karelian material to date. In Karelia, the number of “Karelian” commercial names grow, which do not always correspond to linguistic norms. The analysis of the image semantics of the “Talojärvi” case showed that this oikonym does not fit into the surrounding urbanonymic landscape, and the “Karelian” urbanonyms of the residential complex are semantically inconsistent with the surrounding names. In the course of a representative sociological study, it was found that the majority of its participants consider it necessary to create and promote Karelian brands, and it is important to keep linguistic norms. The issues of linguistic expertise, which regulates creative activity, are on the agenda.
Key words: naming, urbanonyms, onomastics, sociolinguistics, socioonomastics, Karelia, Karelian language, Russian language
Acknowledgments: the research was carried out within state assignment of Karelian Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences “Baltic-Finnish Languages of the North-West of Russia in the Context of Digitalization of Scientific Knowledge” (124022000089-4).
