Abstract. The article deals with an interesting «discovery» for Udmurt linguistics – an etymological dictionary by S. V. Sokolov, published in the mid-1990s in the local journal for teachers «Wordskem Kyl». For more than 20 years the materials of the dictionary have not been used in practice. The publication of the dictionary as a separate volume could contribute to the revival of interest to the Udmurt language and its roots, as well as stimulate further research work. Publication of the dictionary by S.V. Sokolov as a printed version would be a tribute to the scholar who devoted his life to the study and promotion of the Udmurt language. Keywords: etymological dictionary, vocabulary, Udmurt and Finno-Ugric linguistics.
