ABSTRACT
Introduction: the article examines the semantics, structural features, and functioning of complex sentences (CSS) with subordinate clauses using the Erzya language, one of the Finno-Ugric one. The analysis includes identifying the principles of organization of these constructions and identifying the means of connection between their components. It is noted that the meaning of the condition expressed by the clause is heterogeneous and can be classified as both real and unreal.
Objective: to identify the main patterns of the substantive and formal organization of complex sentences with subordinate clauses.
Research materials: complex sentences with subordinate clauses extracted from literary texts by Mordovian authors in the Erzya language.
Results and novelty of the research: the scientific novelty of this study lies in the fact that it is the first Mordovian linguistics to present a systematic, multifaceted description of complex sentences expressing conditional relations, in terms of the principles of their structure and the possibilities for substantive and formal variation. Their structure, semantics, and functional features are analyzed in detail. The article examines the two main types of conditional meaning realized in syntactic constructions of this type – real and unreal (desired, assumed, possible), distinguished depending on the speaker’s opinion regarding the nature of the conditioning situation. The study revealed that complex sentences with subordinate clauses have a fairly transparent structure and a standard form of presentation. The study revealed that complex sentences with subordinate clauses have a fairly transparent structure and a standard form of presentation. They can be either two- or multi641 component, with the main clause and subordinate clause(s) interacting in a specific way to form a coherent communicative unit, the order of which is linked to the tasks of actual division, distinguishing between theme and rheme.
Key words: complex sentence, subordinate clause, real condition, unreal condition, means of connection between the main and subordinate clauses, order of predicative parts, modal properties, theme-rheme distribution of information
