ABSTRACT
Introduction: the proposed article presents an analysis of the state of the phonetic structure of the word basis in the Mordovian languages in comparison with the Baltic-Finnish (Finnish and Estonian). The study reveals the degree of identity of the ancient basis of the word, as well as the presence and nature of the changes in the languages under consideration.
Objective: to study on the basis of a comparative method the preserved degree of identity of the ancient basis and the resulting phonetic changes in the nominal and verbal foundations of Finno-Ugric origin in the field of consonantism at the beginning of the word.
Research materials: nominal and verbal foundations of Finno-Ugric origin in the modern Mordovian languages, considered from the point of view of the comparative historical method with their etymological correspondences in the Baltic-Finnish (Finnish and Estonian) languages.
Results and novelty of the research: the article provides a detailed description of the development of the consonant system at the beginning of the Finno-Ugric word base, identifies differences in the compared languages as a result of the separate development, identifies the reasons that transformed the structure of the Pra-Finno- Ugric base in the Mordovian languages.
Key words: consonantism, word base, Mordovian languages, palatalization, assimilation, affricate.
