The essay of Gyula Illyés: «the journey to the inevitable end»

ABSTRACT
Introduction: the article considers the study of the peculiarities of the essayistic heritage of Gyula Illyеs – the largest Hungarian author, the owner of numerous awards and awards in literature. Objective: to describe the uniqueness and key characteristics of the essay genre in the context of the novelistic creativity of G. Illyés on the example of «In Charon’s Ferry or Symptoms of Old Age». Research materials: the basis of the research was a structurally complex work «In Charon’s Ferry or Symptoms of Old Age», created at the junction of two genre forms. Results and novelty of the research: the scientific novelty of the article is identification of the genre elements inherent in the essays which play a major role in the construction of the plot-composition structure of the novel by G. Illyés «In Charon’s Ferry or Symptoms of Old Age»: aphoristic character, the prevalence of the author’s outset, depth, maturity of an essayist’s views and beliefs, a constant dialogue with a reader. Also, the direct relationship of the work with «The Essays» оf M. Montaigne is noted and a comparative analysis with other genre forms characteristic for the Hungarian literature of the XX century (for example, with sociography) is carried out.
