Results and novelty of the research: the article attempted to describe the main trends of development of the genre of essay in Udmurt literature in the post-war period; to study the historical patterns of transformation of its varieties. The article focuses on the peculiarities of poetics and the main elements of the artistic structure of the essay. The objects of the analysis are M. Vorontsov’s essays, the texts of which are introduced into scientific circulation for the first time; their problematic character reflects the originality of the era and demonstrates the process of the birth of the image of a labor person in the national literature of new time. Not insisting on the indisputability of individual observations, the article offers modern approaches to the study of a certain stage of history of Udmurt literature.
