ABSTRACT
Introduction: philologist, translator, polyglot, Full Member of the Imperial St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, Fyodor Evgenyevich Korsh is a phenomenal personality in the history of Russian and world science and culture. Korsch knew about forty languages and dialects, but biographers did not have accurate information when the scientist mastered the Hungarian language. His translations from Hungarian poetry are practically forgotten, they have not been reprinted and have not become the subject of special analysis.
Objective: to present and analyze Fyodor Korsch’s undeservedly forgotten translations from Hungarian poetry. To achieve the objective, the following tasks need to be solved: 1) based on archival materials, to restore the history of the creation of translations; 2) to give an attribution of poetic texts; 3) to compare the translations with the originals and translations of other poets.
Research materials: the poems of Sándor Petőfi and János Arany, their translated versions; archival materials from the Korsh fund; memoirs, epistolary, biographical works related to the personality and work of F. E. Korsch.
Results and novelty of the research: based on the study of archival materials, the history of Academician Korsh’s appeal at the last stage of his life and activity to the study of the Hungarian language and the creation of translations of poems by Sándor Petőfi and János Arany is reconstructed. As a result of the research, the forgotten translation works of the outstanding philologist are returned to scientific and literary use; their attribution and translation characteristics are given for the first time. Parallels are noted between translation practice and the scientist’s work on poetic and linguistic works; the
comparison of Korsh’s poetic transcriptions “From Magyar Poets” with the author’s solutions of other translators is made.
Key words: Fyodor Evgenyevich Korsh, Sándor Petőfi, János Arany, Hungarian language, poetic translation.
Acknowledgements: the author is grateful to the staff of the Russian State Library for the archival materials provided for the research, as well as to the reviewers of the article.
