Genre specificity of the story «Potyopka» by Yuvan Shestalov

ABSTRACT Introduction. The article deals with the genre specifics of the story by Yuvan Shestalov «Potyopka». The research is carried out on the basis of the general genre features, as well as the essential features which are characteristic for national literatures with a recent system of writing. Shestalov had come to literature, when a new cultural myth was denoted, the basis of which was the idea of an extinct national world and the reconstruction of people’s consciousness for a new life. We will try to show how the author could create the epic plot on the minimum space of the text.
Objective: to study the prose of Yuvan Shestalov to identify the features of the genre of a story. Research materials: the story by Yuvan Shestalov «Potyopka» created by him at the beginning of his career. Results and novelty of the research. Yuvan Shestalov, turning to the creation of prose genres, wrote the stories in which he showed the specific cases of lives of the characters. In the story «Potyopka» (1963) through the fate of the hero the author showed changes in the life and consciousness of the Mansi. Rejection of the role of the shaman in favor of the role of the Soviet artist appeared as change of the role for Potyopka. The writer described the internal (psychological) and social conflict, reveals a kind of national character, which was influenced by many events of the time. His hero successively lives in two worlds, and the conflict of the story is not so much in the nature of his relationships with the outer space, but perhaps more – in his inner struggle. It seems that the epoch wins: Potyopka was a shaman and became an artist. However, the impact of his song on the audience, performed on stage, shows that he still retains the shamanic essence. Interaction of the work of art with folklore has determined the stylistic originality of the story. Shestalov combines the typical features of different genres in the story «Potyopka».
