The Goddess Kattashh-Imi in the folklore of the Middle Ob Khanty

Abstract. Introduction: the women goddess Kattashh-Imi, known among the Ob Ugrians, was the most revered among all deities; songs, tales, mythological stories preserved till the present time. According to the views of the Khanty and Mansi she is the daughter of the Supreme deity Numi Torum. Her main functions: to give the children, to give
the soul to the newborns, to determine and measure the lifetime. If she gives lives to one people it means that she takes lives of other people and these people die. Numi Torum allowing her coming down the earth told her to measure life of people and write about it on a wooden tag in the form of notches. Research materials: folklore sources and traditional representations about the goddess Kattashh-Imi, field materials collected among the local group of the Middle Ob Khanty. The relevance of the study is determined by increased interest to the spiritual culture of the Khanty, including to the woman goddess Kattashh-Imi. This article is a continuation of a number of publications and researches of the author about the woman deities of the Middle Ob Khanty. Results and novelty of the research: this work can be used in scientific researches, in the preparation of courses of lectures on ethnography, cultural studies, history, religion and philosophy for students. Scientific novelty of the article lies in the fact that the research of image of the goddess was carried out in conjunction of folklore material with traditional representations of the Middle Ob Khanty.
