ABSTRACT Introduction:
the article is devoted to the research of Khanty literature and fits into the complex of research of modern Finno-Ugric literary studies. The subject of the analysis is the historical theme in the creative work of Roman Prokopyevich Rugin, one of the leading Khanty prose writers of the twentieth century (1939–2016).
Objective: to reveal the historical theme in the stories and novels of the Khanty writer R. P. Rugin.
Research materials: the materials of the research are the tales and stories of R. P. Rugin, which reflect the events of regional and Russian history of the 20th century and are understood through a set of the modern approaches to literary analysis of a literary text.
Results and novelty of the research: historical theme in the creative work of the Khanty author develops as a reflection of the history of the twentieth century. R. P. Rugin on the pages of its stories and novels («Early Freeze-Up», «Waiting For The Son», «Forty Northern Winds», «Unusual Day», «Special Trip» («Three Skins»), «Sun Over The Snows») refers to the Great October Socialist Revolution, the Great Patriotic War. Through the fate of the hero the author recreates time. The events of 1941–1945 years are shown by R. P. Rugin also through heroic labor in the rear, including adolescents. The author speaks about extraordinary unity of the people united by common tragedy, common grief. The memory of the war lives in those who passed it and survived in it. Describing those times, the writer uses details, minimizes historical personification; he assigns an important role to nature, and often uses the method of retrospection. History has become one of the important components not only of R. P. Rugin’s creative work, but also of the entire national literature of the Khanty.
