Introduction: after the adoption of the «Charter on the management of the allogeneous people» introduced in 1822, the system of management of the Siberian peoples became more complex and replenished with missionary institutions. The spread of Orthodox faith among the pagans of the extreme North-West of Siberia was considered by the missionaries as part of the necessary russification of «non-Russians». Objective: to consider the discussion problems of history of the creation and abolition of the Obdorsk Mission in the 1920s – 1930s. of XIX century: historiography of the problem; factors which contributed to the activation of missionary activity; motives which guided the church authorities in the opening and liquidation of the Mission. Research materials: the research was carried out on the basis of documents of the State Archives in Tobolsk; materials of periodicals, primarily the Tobolsk Diocesan Gazette; personal sources – the diaries of the right Reverend Evgeniy (Kazantsev). Results and novelty of the research: the motives which guided the authorities in the opening of a special spiritual Mission in Obdorsk were revealed. conditions, deviation from the elaborate implementation of the plans, absence of personal qualities helping to overcome difficulties; opposition of the secular authorities with whom the Russian Orthodox Church, as a rule, in the period under consideration tried not to enter into a conflictual relationship; the resistance of the aborigines
who saw in missionaries a threat to the habitual way of life.
