Results and scientific novelty. For the first time, the article examines the image of a hero in M. P. Plotnikov’s poem “Yangal Maa” (“Tundra”). In 22 songs of the poem, united by a common plot, the story of Vaza’s formation from a simple Mansi youth, from a young musician into a hero, a defender of his people, appears. The poem combines the heroic and the fabulous. Fairytale motifs enhance the characterization of the hero. Strength, courage, endurance, courage, service to a high goal, the priority of the interests of the people over personal ones distinguishes this hero of the poem. The feats performed, the journey to the Kingdom of the Dead, the conversation with Torym, the loss of his beloved build a traditional chain of events found in epic poems. M. Plotnikov, relying on the traditions of Mansi folklore, creates a poem in which the image of the hero acquires new features and fits into the series of heroes of world literature that are already found in the poems of Homer.
