ABSTRACT
Introduction: in the Surgut and Kazym dialects of the Khanty language specialists distinguish two unvoiced obstruent phonemes of the l-type written as ԓ and љ. Due to these consonants both dialects are traditionally classified as ł-dialects. In accordance with our observations the bearers of the Surgut dialect normally pronounce other lateral consonant as well. Lateral fricative centrally rounded consonants of the s-type were previously fixed in the modern Mongol (Khalkha) language and in the Kumandy and Shor languages (which belong to the Turkic languages of Siberia) as a result of an experimental work (namely dental-palatalgraphy). Similar lateral hissing as well as hushing and aspirated consonants are also typical for the Surgut dialect of the Khanty language.
Objective: is to distinguish and to describe the main articulatory tunings of the Surgut consonants represented by the graphemes ԓ and љ. The objective is also to define these realizations as fully as possibly as a result of audio-visual characterization.
Research materials: the material for the publication has been collected by the author from the bearers of the Surgut dialect and transcribed in UUPT (Universal Unified Phonetic Transcription). The specially designed questionnaire on the Surgut vocalism was read by three Surgut subjects and recorded with handy recorder Zoom H4n.
Results and novelty of the research: nine lateral fricative consonants («qбC»), «=бC», «?C», «@C», «?бC», «@бC», «C», «Rќ», «Dб») and one lateralized consonant («qбC») were revealed as a result of Surgut Khanty pronunciations analysis of separate word-forms in different positional-combinatory conditions. All of them are represented as ԓ and љ graphemes. All distributions of each allophone were listed in a special table. Each consonant was thoroughly defined.
Key words: Khanty language, Surgut dialect, phonetics, perceptual analysis, consonants, voiceless consonants, lateral consonants, specific sounds.
