Introduction: the article presents the results of work on collecting, processing and mapping of lexical material for the dialectological atlas of the Erzya dialects. The analysis of Mordovian dialects through the method of linguistic geography reflects achievements of recent years and gives characteristic of the considered problems in the dialect systems. The article describes the main works in Finno-Ugric linguistics, in which methods of linguistic geography have been used.
Objective: the authors have defined the main directions of work on compilation of the dialectological atlas; they’ve shown the methodology of the research, defined the reference points to be mapped.
Research materials: the dialects of the villages most clearly illustrating the features of dialectal types have been dialectally mapped.
Results and novelty of research: the analysis of the dialect material of the compiled maps revealed a large number of correspondences of the considered lexemes. As an illustration, the dialect map of the lexeme ovtoumar ‘dogrose’ is given in the article. The compiled map fully reflects the variability of this lexeme. It is represented by lexical, derivational and phonetic variants. Based on the analysis, it is noted that creation of the dialectological atlas of the Mordovian languages is an important stage of development of dialectology of the Erzya and Moksha languages. Being a fundament of dialect material in its territorial distribution, the dialectological atlas serves as a basis for various aspects of language learning through the method of linguistic geography.
Key words: dialectological atlas, dialect, subdialect, dialect type, dialectal division, linguistic geography, reference points, mapping, sign, area, lexeme, variability.
