The lexicon of the water landscape in the Kildin Saami language

Abstract:The article analyses the concept of «Water landscape» in the Kildin Saami language from the standpoint of the modern language speaker. The data from the dictionary of T. Itkonen «Koltan- ja kuolanlapin sanakirja I» are for the first time compared with the current state of the Kildin Saami language lexicon. The research results showed that the lexicon of the water landscape in the modern Kildin Saami language has these basic concepts: water, types of reservoirs, their components and physical and geographical features, properties of water, designation of land areas in/around a reservoir. A part of the Kildin Saami lexicon has become passive: this part of lexicon is not present in the field survey data. The analysis of the Kildin Saami language shows the following conceptual and semantic changes: specification of a concept, non-distinction of concepts, as well as expansion of the lexical meaning, semantic shift, transfer depending on functions, doublet forms.
