ABSTRACT
Introduction: the publication considers the images of the Mansi people of the Verkhotursky District, which were created by observers in the middle of the XIX century. The analysis of these images helps to clarify the specifics of concrete historical and ethnic differences.
Objective: identification of the value attitudes of observers during creation of images of the indigenous inhabitants of the North and scenarios of behavior in interethnic contacts.
Research materials: ethnographic descriptions compiled by priests, correspondents of the Russian Geographical Society and the publication of L. Kh. Simonova “The Endangered Tribe (Historical and Ethnographic Essay)”.
Results and novelty of the research: the article considers the distinctive features in the descriptions of the life of the Mansi people of the middle of the XIX century in the north of the Verkhotursky District. The comparative source approach approach made it possible to reveal the features of interethnic contacts and life scenarios of the inhabitants of the Ural taiga. The application of this method made it possible to identify differences in the value attitudes of educated researchers and natives. Historical criticism of the descriptions of the Mansi people suggests the possibility to shift attention from situational moments to important generalizations about the processes of acculturation in the XIX century. The results obtained allow us to assert about significant successes in the Mansi peoples’ environment gradually acquired the skills of orientation in new social realities, when it was necessary to be able to make contacts, change their economic life and behavior. The acquisition of a new subjectivity is evidence of the high adaptive abilities of the Mansi ethnos, which was almost not noticed by observers. Further study of interethnic contacts is able to make adjustments to the regional history. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the shift of attention to socio-psychological issues in ethnological research.
Key words: natives, assimilation, Verkhotursky District, Vogul (Mansi) people, integration, contacts, observers, objectivity, image, description
