Abstract. The article deals with the history of study the pair words in the Finno-Ugric linguistics. History of linguistics demonstrates the various ways and methods of language study, establishes a link between many ways of language description, explains the reason for dissimilar interpretations of the same phenomena in different scientifi c schools and directions at all phases of the development of linguistic science.
