ABSTRACT
Introduction: the peculiarities of peasant literature in the ethnographic essays of the first Udmurt scholar and writer G. Ye. Vereshchagin are analyzed in the comparative aspect within the framework of the genesis of Udmurt literature.
Objective: to analyze the typical feature of G. Ye. Vereshchagin’s ethnographic essays.
Research materials: the elements of peasant literature in the structure of G. Ye. Vereshchagin’s ethnographic essays.
Results and novelty of the research: under the term «peasant literature» is usually understood the first publications of texts with artistic value written by people of lower social status, because they represented the views of peasants and literate people who shared their values. In Russia the texts of this type were recorded in the end of XVII – the beginning of XVIII centuries. Due to the academicians H. Paasonen and A. A. Shakhmatov, in the end of XIX century the Mordovian peasant literature in the Erzya and Moksha languages became popular. There is no research on the Udmurt peasant literature, but the ethnographic essays of the first Udmurt scholar and writer G. Ye. Vereshchagin (1851–1930) contain a number of texts, representing peasants’ viewpoints. Together they outline the ways of formation of prose genres of Udmurt literature. The novelty of the research is revealed at three levels: finding out the elements of peasant literature in period of formation of the Udmurt literature; comparing this trend with similar phenomena in other ethnic literatures; the role of peasant literature in creative development of the first Udmurt writer G. Ye. Vereshchagin.
Key words: peasant literature, ethnographer, informants, writer, representative of consciousness, genres of prose.
