ABSTRACT
Introduction: in conditions of the mosaicism of modern culture and loss of unequivocal ethnic orientations the production of various kinds of «identity indicators» increases. Visuality (photography, cinema, media images, etc.) becomes an essential factor in construction of ethno-cultural identity. It makes urgent an appeal to the technologies of creation and representation of the ethno-images developed in art, particular in art of photography.
Objective: the article is devoted to the features of representation of information through ethnographic photographs. Under representation here we mean the production of mediated images of ethnic culture of the Ob Ugrians, giving an idea about the «original».
Research sources: original historic photographs, photographic materials from the ethnographic albums published in different periods as well as information about the photo-collection on the Ob Ugrian contained in scientific literature.
Results and novelty of the research: the article traces key moments of the Ob Ugrians’ photo history; examines issues about technologies of production of the photo-images of ethnic culture, their information potential and social functions of the ethnographic photographs. The author concludes that currently historical photo information often appears as the images of ethnic culture, which in turn are considered as a source of symbols involved in formation of the ethnic identity of the Khanty and Mansi.
Scientific novelty lies in research and interpretation of practices of visual self-presentation of the Ob Ugrians insufficiently studied at the moment. The latter are considered as the evidence of historical memory and communicative activity aimed at supporting of ethnic community.
Key words: Ob Ugrians, photography, ethnic culture, photo-representations, technologies, visualization, image, ethnic identity, historical memory.
Acknowledgments: the research was carried out with the financial support of the RFBR (project № 18-05-60040 «New technologies and social institutions of the indigenous population of the Russian Arctic: opportunities and risks» headed by E. A. Pivneva).
