ABSTRACT
Introduction: the research is devoted to the little-studied issue of the development of the school education system in the North of Karelia in the 1920s and 1930s in the domestic and foreign historiography.
Objective: to identify the features of development of the school education system in the Northern National District of the Soviet border in the 1920s–1930s.
Research materials: written sources – office documents from the funds of the National Archive of the Republic of Karelia, population Census data and sources of personal origin (memoirs of school graduates from the Ukhta school which introduced into scientific circulation for the first time).
Results and novelty of the research: on the basis of a wide corpus of the historical sources, an attempt was made to reconstruct the process of revival and development of school education in the village Ukhta of North Karelia. After the Civil War, with the establishment of Soviet power, there was a revision of approaches to the organization and subject content of the educational activity. The implementation of innovations took place in the ethno-cultural environment. The traditions, mentality, standard of living of the local Finno-Ugric population, and the language policy of the Soviet state had a significant impact on educational results.
Key words: North Karelia, Ukhta village, Karelian peoples, education system, school
