ABSTRACT
Introduction: the timeliness of the problem of vocabulary update on account of word-formation processes is determined by the fact that it helps to reveal the systemic nature of active word-formation and predict the main trends in the development of the language. The morphological word-formation is rather productive in the Erzya language. A comprehensive study of select derivational, especially productive morphemes, which determine the real possibilities of word-formation, is considered one of the topical issues in linguistics.
Objective: the paper focuses on description of productive derivational suffixes of adjectives, including the frequency of their use, semantics, and way of attachment to the underlying stem.
Research materials: Erzya-Russian dictionary with most common lexemes, reflecting the current state of the language and trends in its development.
Results and novelty of the research: traditional ways of word-formation in the Erzya language are still in use, productive suffixes are actively involved in the formation of new adjectives. The most productive in creation of new adjectives, according to the results of the study, in the Erzya language, is the suffix -n’ covering 45,00% of new word forms. It produces adjectives denoting time, place, material, a distinctive feature, an attribute inherent to an object. The morphemes -v, -j form qualitative adjectives derived from noun stems meaning «having a certain quality, attribute», their share amounts to 26,25%. The dictionary contains adjectives with the so-called restrictive suffixes -za, -nza, -zha, -la, denoting a measure of the quality of the subject regardless of the extent to which it manifests itself in other subjects (17,65%). To convey the meaning of absence of any attribute, quality, the suffixes -teme / tomo (-vteme / -vtomo) are used, the proportion of such adjectives comprises 7,29%. Extremely small is proportion of such suffixes as: -tse, -lt, -lk, -sht, -st’, -t’, -n’e, -ne, -ka, -ke, -mo, -ma, as well as unproductive ones such as -ks, -na, -n’a. Scientific novelty of the article lies in the fact that the semantics of derivational suffixes of adjectives in the Erzya language has been analyzed in detail.
Key words: suffix, adjective name, derivational (word-formation) suffixes, productive suffixes, the Erzya language, semantic aspect.
