Semantic volume of the ethnonym roch in the Komi language

ABSTRACT
Introduction: in recent decades, the study of the semantic content of linguistic units, primarily lexical resources, has been actively developing in modern linguistics. However, in Komi and Perm linguistics, the study of lexical semantics has so far been carried out in fragments. The article is devoted to the study of diachronic changes in the meaning of the ethnonym roch ‘Russian’ in the Komi language, identification of the semantic volume of the lexeme, study of the dynamics of changes, and development of the meanings of the lexeme.
Objective: to reveal the most complete semantic volume of the Komi lexeme roch with the main meaning of ‘Russian’ both in the modern language and in terms of diachrony.
Research materials: the author’s personal archive, examples of the use of the Komi ethnonym roch ‘Russian’, words and lexicological phrases with this word, dictionaries of the Komi language of the XIX and XX centuries.
Results and novelty of the research: the article presents six lexical and semantic variants that make up the components of the semantic volume of the lexeme roch in the Komi language; the scheme of sequences of lexical and semantic variants development is revealed. For the first time, the article provides a complete description of the semantic volume of the ethnonym roch in the Komi language, identifies six lexical and semantic variants or co-meanings, identifies the scheme of diachronic sequence in their formation, and characterizes the features of their distribution in various texts.
