ABSTRACT
Introduction: the article is devoted to the creative activity of famous Ugric scholar and historian Zoya Petrovna Sokolova, whose scientific biography is considered in the general context of Soviet ethnographic Northern studies and, more broadly, in context of national politics and ideology. The study of the activities of ethnographers of the era of «developed socialism» is of great interest for comprehension of the past of the science, which is a necessary condition for its further fruitful development.
Objective: to offer the scientific community a view on state of Soviet ethnographic Northern studies in the second half of the XX century through the prism of the scientific heritage of Z. P. Sokolova, famous Russian ethnographer and historian.
Research materials: bibliography and works of Z. P. Sokolova (selected publications, field diaries, reports, memos), oral reports and interviews, scientific literature on the research theme.
Results and novelty of the research: the analysis of Sokolova’s scientific biography by the “close-up” method made possible to construct a general motivational scheme of Soviet ethnographers-North scholars’ activities in the late Soviet period. There were revealed individual features and typical trajectories of their scientific developments in the context of Soviet national policy and ideology. The study showed that topics and directions of the Northern studies were largely predetermined by practical socio-political needs and requests. At the same time, ethnographic knowledge followed the logic
of the internal science development, partly determined by the previous research tradition. The novelty of the work lies in the approach to study of intellectual heritage of the northernists-scientists as a valuable source that makes possible to reveal the role of project activities of scientific teams and individuals in formation and development of ethnographic science and in its practical application.
Key words: Northern studies, Moscow Ethnographic School, scientific heritage, peoples of the North, Soviet national policy, applied research.
Acknowledgments: the work was supported by the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (project № 21-09-43116 «Soviet Ethnography in State-Building and National Policy of the USSR»).
