Structure of characters of Mansi folklore: the forest woman Misne

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Structure of characters of Mansi folklore still does not fall into the focus of attention of scientists. At the same time, its understanding opens up new frontiers for the study of mythological representations, culture, and worldview of the Northern ethnos. The characters of folklore are people, animals, elements, fantastic (mythical) creatures. In this article, we will focus on one character – Misne. In Mansi folklore, she is represented as the forest woman. Her main function is to help forest residents and hunters. Extensive information about her is contained in fairy tales and tales.
Objective: systematic analysis of the Misne's image based on the material of folklore texts and folk ideas.
Research materials: the texts of Mansi tales published in various folklore collections in periodicals; historical sources, as well as field material of the author. For detailing, we also involve prohibitions that are common in the Mansi culture.
Results and novelty of the research: the study adds the scientific knowledge of Mansi folklore. Based on folklore, linguistic, literary and historical data, the article reveals the image of the forest woman. The characteristics of Misne are fixed in the folklore texts, her description is given. The anthropomorphism of the image, its desire for socialization distinguishes the folklore image from the mythological one. The folklore texts determine the boundaries and the degree of interaction of a people with Misne. The material opens up prospects for continuing research on the character and plot structure of Mansi folklore.
