ABSTRACT
Introduction: the paper deals with experimental acoustic research on six rounded vowels /ʊː/, /ɔː/, /oː/, /u/, /ɔ/, /o/ in the Surgut dialect of the Khanty language, that have been described inconsistently.
Objective: to describe and compare phonetic features of rounded vowels recorded from the native speakers of the Surgut dialect of the Khanty living on Lyamin, Tromjegan and Ortjagun Rivers.
Research materials: the audio recordings by six native speakers including more than 1100 utterances with rounded vowels which were processed via Praat and Emu-SDMS software.
Results and novelty of the research: timbre shades of the phonemes are described. The results show dependence of F2 value on consonant context. Labial consonants cause F2 lowering of contact vowels when palatal consonants cause F2 rising. For long vowels left context influence is higher than the right one, whereas for short vowels both left and right contexts are significant. Several variants of the system are revealed. The realizations of the phonemes /ɔ/, /ɔː/ are open-mid o-like sound or more close and advanced o-timbre sound. The phoneme /ɔ/ is absent in the Pim subdialect. The phoneme /u/ is central but some speakers can have front unrounded or back allophones. For some lexemes remarks on optimal orthography are made. The novelty of the paper is that acoustic data on rounded vowels are used to describe position variability and dialectal differences in the Surgut vowel system.
Key words: Khanty language, Surgut dialect, experimental phonetics, phonology, rounded vowels, Praat, Emu-SDMS.
