ABSTRACT
Introduction: the article considers the nominations of fire and its functional and semantic field in the Khanty language on the material of the Kazym dialect with the involvement of a number of examples from other dialects. The analysis revealed the everyday and sacred-symbolic meaning of this lexeme, the verbal vocabulary reflecting the various stages (as well as the intensity) of fire burning in the Khanty language code.
.Objective: to identify and structure the vocabulary that expresses the names of the fire, the stages of burning, as well as to establish its significance in the language; to offer a lexical and semantic description.
Research materials: Khanty-Russian dictionaries, including V. Steinitz’s dialectological and etymological dictionary; folklore collections, articles, research on ethnography, cultural studies; field materials of the authors.
Results and novelty of the research: in the study, for the first time, a layer of vocabulary with a sacred-symbolic meaning in the Khanty culture is analyzed. As a result of the analysis, 8 names reflecting the most ancient mythological representations of the people were identified; 35 verbal units demonstrating various stages of fire burning, including intensity; the high status of fire, reflected in stable expressions, is shown. It should also be noted, that the layer of verbal vocabulary related to the functional and semantic field «fire» was reconstructed based on the authors’ field materials.
